New Covid XEC Strain: Symptoms and Vaccination Updates
A new strain of COVID-19, named XEC, has been identified in the UK, raising concerns as cases increase rapidly. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported that the admission rate for patients testing positive for the new strain surged to 4.5 per 100,000 people in the week leading up to October 6, a significant rise from 3.7 the previous week.
The XEC strain is a combination of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants and is believed to be more transmissible due to its numerous mutations. Symptoms associated with this new strain mirror those of other COVID-19 variants, including fatigue, headaches, sore throat, and elevated temperatures.
While self-isolation is no longer mandated by law in the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) recommends that anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 minimize contact with others for at least five days. It is particularly advised to avoid contact with vulnerable individuals for ten days to mitigate any potential risk.
Symptoms of the Covid XEC Strain
The XEC strain exhibits symptoms akin to those of a cold or flu, including:
- High temperature
- Body aches
- Tiredness
- Cough or sore throat
Vaccination Information
In response to the emerging threat of the XEC strain, the NHS has initiated the rollout of autumn COVID-19 boosters aimed at the most vulnerable populations. Eligible groups for the NHS COVID booster between October 3 and December 20 include:
- Individuals aged 65 and older
- Those aged six months to 64 years with underlying health conditions, including pregnant women
- Residents of care homes for the elderly
- Frontline NHS and social care workers, as well as those working in care homes for older individuals
Eligible individuals can schedule their booster appointments through the NHS App, local GP surgeries, pharmacies, drop-in clinics, or by calling 119.
As the situation develops, staying informed and following health guidelines is crucial to mitigate the spread of this new strain.
